Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia—a condition in which the autonomic nervous system (ANS) doesn’t regulate functions like heart rate, blood pressure, and circulation as it should. For people with POTS, simply standing up can cause dizziness, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, brain fog, and even fainting.
While POTS management often involves multiple health professionals, chiropractic care offers a unique, non-invasive way to support nervous system function and improve quality of life.
The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary processes like breathing, digestion, and heart rate. In POTS, the sympathetic (“fight or flight”) branch tends to be overactive, while the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) branch struggles to keep up. This imbalance can make everyday activities exhausting and unpredictable.
Because the spine protects and houses the spinal cord—one of the main communication highways for the ANS—misalignments (subluxations) can disrupt nerve signals, potentially adding stress to an already sensitive system.
At Awesome Family Chiropractic, we focus on removing interference from the nervous system so the body can function more efficiently. For someone with POTS, this can mean:
Gentle spinal adjustments help restore proper joint movement, which allows clearer communication between the brain and body. By reducing mechanical stress in the spine, the ANS can better regulate blood pressure and heart rate responses.
Restricted spinal movement—especially in the thoracic and cervical regions—can affect muscle tone and blood vessel function. Chiropractic care may help improve posture, reduce muscle tension, and encourage better blood flow when changing positions.
When the spine is under stress, it can increase sympathetic nervous system activity. Adjustments and gentle techniques like the Activator Method or low-force mobilization can help calm that overactivity, promoting more parasympathetic balance.
Our care plans may include gentle exercises, posture training, and breathing techniques that support stability and reduce symptom flare-ups when moving from sitting to standing.
Because POTS patients can be sensitive to rapid movements or changes in position, care is tailored to the individual:
While chiropractic care is not a cure for POTS, many patients report:
The goal is to help the nervous system operate at its best so the body can adapt more effectively.
At Awesome Family Chiropractic, with locations in Alpine, La Mesa, and Santee, we help patients of all ages find better balance and function. If you or someone you love is managing POTS, we’d be honored to be part of your care team.
